Fröåsa Handpaper Mill, Virserum.

Fröåsa is one of the few preserved places where you make paper by hand in Sweden and is therefore a monument of big interest.
Fröåsa handpaper mill was the first industry in the district when it was built in 1802 by the Fröåsa stream in the Kråketorp river. During the first half of the 19th century they made type- and writingpaper while later they mostly produced coarser paper. The raw material for the manufacturing was rags, i.e. old clothes that were bought from wandering ragmen. The paper mill was in operation until 1921 when it was dismantled and moved to Gothenburg. There it was shown at the big exhibition which opened in 1923. The paper mill was taken back to Virserum and was eventually set up again in the Open Air Museum in 1950.
Each summer you can see the making of paper by hand and they use the same watermark as they did at the beginning of the 19th century.

Location: The Open Air Museum of Virserum along road 138 in the southern part of Virserum
