The Wolf Pit in Slättemossa

Back in time the wolf was consider a pain for the farmers. Even during the 1800s we could still find wolf in the forests of Småland.

The wolfpit in Slättemossa is probably dug during the 1700s. The wall is carefully covered with stones and the size is 2,4 meters deep and 4,2 meters wide. The use of hand made holes in the ground to catch animals, has been practiced since the Stone Age.

In the law of Magnus Eriksson from the 1300s, it says that people should keep wolf nets, wolf yards and wolf pits. This obligation vanished in 1864.
